Why do we at CT Organics use unrefined natural ingredients as a mean to be sustainable?

Before I explored how nature can support skin health, I studied synthetic chemistry, learning to create new molecules by combining others. This multi-step process, akin to sewing, is fascinating—sewing produces minimal waste, but synthesis generates byproducts at each stage and relies heavily on solvents to facilitate reactions. These solvents and byproducts must be removed and treated as hazardous or non-hazardous waste, with the solvent volume often far exceeding the desired product. Many non-aqueous solvents are themselves synthesized, frequently from petroleum-based molecules, adding to the environmental burden.

In contrast, unrefined natural ingredients undergo minimal processing, preserving their inherent benefits. For instance, organic extra virgin coconut oil, extracted from coconut meat through cold-pressing, retains its rich profile of fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. When incorporated into soaps or lotions, this oil delivers a range of beneficial molecules, not just a single compound, and its saponified form produces a creamy lather that deeply cleanses the skin.

Refining natural ingredients, however, often involves organic solvents, which strip away valuable molecules and generate waste in the process. By opting for unrefined natural ingredients, you promote sustainability while maximizing skin health benefits.

Finally, for natural ingredients to be sustainable, they must not disrupt the symbiotic relationships within their ecosystems. Increased research and resources should be directed toward sustainable expansion strategies, facilitating a wider adoption of natural ingredients for healthy skin and healthier planet.
